Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.

Officers state they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.

The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.

Police then discovered many other smeared vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Police state early analysis suggest the substance was probably blood from a person.

"There is still no clue as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.

Local authorities stated they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.

A senior official said the incident left him without words and needed to be resolved rapidly.

"This act hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he posted on a platform, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
